How to Care for Your Girl's Party Dress: Washing & Storage Tips
You've found the perfect dress — now let's make sure it stays beautiful for every party, recital and special occasion to come. With the right care, a quality satin or tulle dress can last for years.
Know Your Fabric First
LunaBelle Kids dresses are made from two main fabrics — satin and tulle. Each needs slightly different care.
Satin is a smooth, lustrous fabric that can snag or lose its sheen if washed incorrectly. It needs gentle handling and low heat.
Tulle is a lightweight net fabric used for skirts and underskirts. It holds its shape well but can flatten or tear if handled roughly.
Most of our dresses combine both — a satin bodice with a tulle skirt — so we'll cover how to care for each.
Can You Machine Wash a Girls Party Dress?
For most satin and tulle dresses, hand washing is the safest option. However, many of our dresses can be machine washed on a delicate cycle if you follow these steps:
- Turn the dress inside out to protect the outer surface
- Place in a mesh laundry bag — this prevents snagging and tangling
- Use cold water only — hot water can shrink fabric and fade colour
- Select the delicate or hand wash cycle on your machine
- Use a gentle detergent — avoid anything with bleach or optical brighteners
- Do not spin at high speed — choose the lowest spin setting
When in doubt, hand wash. It takes 5 minutes and is always the safest choice.
How to Hand Wash a Party Dress
Hand washing is the gentlest method and works for all dress types:
- Fill a clean basin or sink with cool water
- Add a small amount of gentle liquid detergent (baby detergent works well)
- Submerge the dress and gently swish — do not scrub or wring
- Let it soak for 5–10 minutes
- Rinse thoroughly with cool clean water until all soap is gone
- Gently press out excess water — never twist or wring the fabric
- Lay flat or hang to dry
How to Dry a Satin or Tulle Dress
Never put a party dress in the tumble dryer. The heat will damage the fabric, shrink the lining and flatten the tulle.
Instead:
- Lay flat on a clean dry towel — gently reshape the skirt while damp
- Or hang on a padded hanger away from direct sunlight
- Allow to air dry completely before storing — storing a damp dress can cause mildew
Tulle skirts will fluff back up naturally as they dry. If the tulle looks a little flat after washing, gently shake the skirt while still slightly damp.
Can You Iron a Girls Party Dress?
Satin: Use a cool iron on the reverse side of the fabric (inside out) with a pressing cloth between the iron and the dress. Never iron directly on satin — it will leave shiny marks.
Tulle: Do not iron tulle directly. Use a steamer held at least 15cm away from the fabric. The steam relaxes the fibres and restores volume without damaging the net.
Lining: Iron on a low setting from the inside.
A handheld garment steamer is the best investment for keeping party dresses looking fresh — it works on both satin and tulle safely.
How to Remove Stains from a Party Dress
Act fast — the sooner you treat a stain, the easier it comes out.
Food and drink stains:
- Blot (don't rub) with a clean cloth immediately
- Apply a small amount of diluted gentle detergent to the stain
- Let sit for 5 minutes then rinse with cool water
- Repeat if needed
Grass or mud stains:
- Let mud dry completely before brushing off
- Then treat with a gentle stain remover safe for delicate fabrics
Avoid: bleach, hot water, or rubbing — all of these can damage satin and set stains permanently.
For stubborn stains on a special dress, take it to a professional dry cleaner who works with delicate fabrics.
How to Store a Girls Party Dress
Proper storage keeps a dress looking perfect between wearings:
- Hang on a padded hanger — wire hangers can stretch the shoulders and leave marks
- Cover with a breathable garment bag — avoid plastic bags which trap moisture
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight — sunlight fades fabric over time
- Keep away from other items that could snag the tulle or satin
For long-term storage (between seasons):
- Fold loosely with acid-free tissue paper between layers
- Place in a breathable cotton storage bag or box
- Check every few months for any signs of moisture or discolouration
